At the heart of sustainability is preservation and reuse. Instead of recreating buildings our first efforts should be the use of what is there and transforming them into models of historic preservation, or conversion of viable structures with modern applications and uses.

Joslyn Castle Estate
The Institute is housed in the 1902 former home of George and Sarah Joslyn, a prominent family in the history of Omaha. The buildings and grounds have been entered into the National Register of Historic Places by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The Institute is charged by the State of Nebraska with managing and preserving the estate. The castle and grounds provide an ideal setting for the Institute's educational programs and preservation efforts. view project details

Drake Court District, Omaha
The Drake Court Apartment complex, a set of 14 buildings, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Drake Court buildings were built from 1916 to 1918. In their original condition, they were found on the edge of the city of Omaha, in an affluent and desirable residential area of town. The surrounding area contained many mansions and upscale housing units, of which Drake Court was a part.
